October 3rd, 2024 – Development Update

This week’s Screenshot Challenge winner is Twitter user @pommes_l! If you’re interested in participating in our weekly Screenshot Challenges, check out the details in the Community section below!

Earlier this week, we launched Aircraft & Avionics Update 3 (AAU3)! This release enhances three aircraft: the Airbus A310-300, Airbus A320neo V2, and Pilatus PC-6 Porter. To see what was improved for each plane, you can read the full release notes here. We also released the latest Navdata update (AIRAC cycle 2410) this week. Both AAU3 and the navdata update are installed automatically upon launching the sim.

On Wednesday, we hosted the second of our weekly Developer Livestreams leading up to and following the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 next month. This livestream featured Jorg and three members of the Software Development Kit (SDK) team from Asobo. While the primary intended audience for this session was third-party developers who make add-on products for the sim, regular players may also find the information from the broadcast interesting. Some of the covered topics include:

  • What are the new and enhanced features in the SDK developers can use when making aircraft and airports?
  • Can players use third-party add-on aircraft in Career Mode?
  • Approximately how much developer effort is required to upgrade a Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) add-on to use the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 SDK?
  • And much more!

If you missed seeing it live, you can watch the VOD on our YouTube channel here:

There was much more information the SDK team would like to share than could be covered in the two-hour broadcast, so we have tentatively scheduled a second SDK-focused livestream for next week. Tune in again on Wednesday, October 9 at 9:30am PDT (1630 UTC). As always, we will be livestreaming the broadcast on our official Twitch channel.

Finally, the MSFS Team would like to send our greetings to all the members of our September Family who are currently attending the Reno Air Show this weekend! While we’re sad that we won’t be there in person this year, we’re sure the various performers and display teams — including the US Navy Blue Angels and Canadian Forces Snowbirds — will give a wonderful send-off to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Reno Air Races!

DC Designs Charity Fundraising Promotion

On October 4, 2024, developer DC Designs will be donating 100% of all sales proceeds to the “One Special Day” fundraising event organized by gaming charity SpecialEffect. This organization provides custom-created games, computers, and controllers to people with disabilities that would otherwise prevent them from being able to enjoy games such as Microsoft Flight Simulator. If you’ve been waiting for the opportunity to try some of DC Designs’ popular add-on aircraft for Microsoft Flight Simulator — such as their Tomcat, Concorde, or Stearman Model 75 — Friday, October 4 is a great time to pick up one or more of these planes while supporting a great cause!

Creator Highlight

YouTube content creator and developer AvAngel is our Creator Highlight for October 2024!

With a wealth of experience in flight simulators dating back to FS98, AvAngel remembers the flight simulation community from its early days and has been releasing first look videos on a broad range of aircraft consistently since the launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020).

With an introduction to aviation at the age of only 7 after a family flight in a Cessna 172, AvAngel has been hooked ever since. AvAngel not only has a background in texture development on numerous projects dating back to FSX, but also began their latest YouTube channel dedicated to Microsoft Flight Simulator with strong previous experience in content creation.

AvAngel’s real passion is Bush and General Aviation flying, but is happy to jump into any type of aircraft to help fellow sim pilots on their virtual journey as they showcase what players can expect when they first load into a new aircraft. AvAngel focuses on giving back to a community who has provided her with a space to flourish as a creator and sees her video creations as a project of passion.

Having just attended the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Global Preview Event in the Grand Canyon, AvAngel is looking forward to the diversity of the new world and scope of activities in the Career Mode of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Reminiscing on her childhood entry to flight simulators, she can only imagine what her teenage self would say if she knew just how far her hobby would go.

You can check out AvAngel’s videos from the Global Preview Event of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, as well as all her other content on her YouTube channel!

Community Fly-In Friday

The Community Fly-In Friday World Tour continues!

After a detour across the border into Czechia to land in Prague during the last stage, this week we are re-entering German airspace and making our way to the capital of Berlin!

Berlin itself is home to many famous landmarks (such as the Brandenburg Gate), but our flight plan will also see us fly over several other POIs and will also feature a touch & go landing in Dresden.

For the best experience, be sure to download the FREE World Update XIV: Central Eastern Europe and World Updates VI & XVIII: Germany, Austria, and Switzerland from the in-sim Marketplace.

Event details are available here. All are welcome to participate!

Community Video

For this week’s Community Video, we join our Creator of the Month AvAngel, who provides a first look at the art of Gliding in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 after having had a chance to test it out during the recent Global Preview Event.

With a vast knowledge in this area of aviation, we thoroughly enjoyed watching another great video from AvAngel, and can’t wait to see where her virtual journey leads after the launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator next month!
